Elevating Mental Health in Oklahoma

Oklahoma Counseling Association is powered by its members—and your voice matters. Your community connections and dedication to the profession help shape important policy conversations. OCA is here to support and amplify your efforts with tools, guidance, and coordinated advocacy to ensure counselors are heard and valued at every level of government.

This page offers tools, tips, and guidance to help you feel more confident advocating for our profession and for the well-being of counselors and clients across Oklahoma.

Contact Your Legislators

When reaching out to policymakers, a clear, respectful message can make a meaningful impact. Use the guide below to help shape your outreach.

What to say when connecting with policymakers:
  • Introduce yourself
  • Share your license type (use the full name, as abbreviations like LPC may be unfamiliar)
  • Mention where you are from
  • If leaving a voicemail, include your full address so your call can be properly tallied
  • Note any commonalities you share with the policymaker
  • Clearly state what you’re asking for and reference the bill number, if available
  • Always thank them for their time
  • Writing a short, personalized script can boost your confidence and clarity
  • Tools like 5 Calls offer customizable scripts for national issues
  • Even if you don’t speak directly to a policymaker, contacting a staff member or sending an email still helps ensure your voice is heard

Stay Informed - Track Legislation

Here are some helpful tools and resources you can use to stay informed, track legislation, and stay engaged.

Stay Informed - Bills We’re Monitoring

OCA keeps its finger on the pulse of mental health legislation, tracking how policy changes impact our work—so we can strengthen the counseling profession and better support Oklahoma counselors.

Participate in Coordinated Efforts

Help shape the future of counseling in Oklahoma by getting involved in legislative advocacy. Our Government Relations Committee:
  • Meets virtually every 1-2 weeks starting from the first week in February through the end of the legislative session in May
  • Tracks and discusses the bills moving through the House and Senate including regular updates from our lobbyists.
  • Coordinates with OCA leadership, lobbyists, OCA members, the public, and policymakers to identify advocacy needs
  • Responds to legislative questions, including questions sent to governmentrelations@oklahomacounseling.org
  • Works with the OCA Board of Directors to develop call to action communications to OCA members
  • Shares calls to action via email and on OCA’s official Facebook page, including suggested messaging for outreach.

OCA Government Relations Committee Members

The Government Relations Committee is made up of the Chair, Vice Chair, and representatives from each region and division within OCA. These representatives are nominated by their respective region and division leadership and ensure that all OCA members have a voice on this key committee.

Stay connected. Stay informed.
